Tell me a story about cats

This one started from 'a warehouseman with a personal doom prophecy’ and drifted a lot. First I decided that the prophecy would make him afraid of cats, then I made the family think he SHOULD be afraid of cats but he really liked them, then I scrapped the prophecy but kept the cats.

1. The quiet man is helping unload a shipment. His criminal colleagues say they worry about him being so isolated, he should have a family. It's not the first time they've said this but today, a month away from fifty, he might agree.

2. He's good at his job. He finds contact details for his four siblings and reaches out, while going about his quiet life. The neighborhood cats are attracted to him, but he tries not to encourage them.

3. His siblings refuse contact, in strong and individual tones. One of them in rage, one of them in legalese... In their childhood there was a house fire and he rescued the family cat instead of any of them. They're so very not over it.

4. The old nightmares about choosing between cats and humans return. He continues to be good at his job and inoffensive in his quiet life.

5. Turns down a profitable but violent extension to his job. Turns down a moll. Adds cat food to his quiet grocery shop, goes home, opens the fire escape window. "You may as well come in."

Obviously this isn't even 10k words, unless you added in a lot of other story about his criminal work and colleagues and the neighborhood. What books do you know about quiet criminal men? In film we have Leon and John Wick and so on.

Also, I'm now wondering if 'moll' is a slur.
